The love and energy we feel in the presence of a good friend is invaluable.

It is a special feeling. It is a freeing feeling. It is the transference of the best kind of energy. We often take it for granted. We often overlook the good it brings to our lives until we no longer have it. They say we can’t choose our family but we can choose our friends. The truth is, maybe we can’t choose the family we are born into, but we can certainly choose the family and friends that we allow to continue to impact our lives.
Some of us are in unnecessary pain staying in relationships or friendships, be it with family members or others, that we should leave. We fear and often forget that we do not have to accept being around people who make us feel unloved, neglected or worse. Length of friendship or closeness of relation should not be the reason to stay in an unhappy and/or abusive situation.
We can choose to be around the people who we love who also show us love and compassion. To be around people who give us space to be ourselves and inspire us to want to be our best. When we surround ourselves with genuine people who we can have honest discussions with, a shoulder to lean on, or even a friendly reminder that we can have a laugh, we choose ourselves and we show ourselves the love we deserve.
There’s nothing else quite like a good catch up with a genuine friend. A good vent with and understanding loved one. Or feeling understanding, love and support from them even when you don’t quite have the words to express how you feel. There’s nothing else quite like a good laugh with beautiful soul. The people that remind us we can be happy. Those that in their presence we forget about our stresses. Those who remind us we can live out our crazy ideas.
The people we choose to share a special part of ourselves with and they in turn share the same with us. They matter. Sometimes they forget that they do. Sometimes we forget to tell them. If you’re reading this today and there is anyone in your life that you feel is your friendly reminder, share this with them.
